π― Motion Ranger
Kevin hated summer camp when he was younger. It wasn't that it was bad or anything, it just bored him to tears. He always looked forward to getting home at the end of each week.
This year his parents had decided to sign him up for a new camp called Motion Ranger, knowing about his fascination with fantasy movies and elven warriors. They thought it would be some sort of a roleplay thing with bows and arrows that would surely be right up his alley.
He got there early in the morning, dragging his feet as usual. The bus dropped him off at the front gate where he saw a group of other kids already waiting. He walked towards them cautiously, trying not to look like a complete newbie.
"Hey, I'm Kevin," he said sheepishly. "I guess you guys are here for Motion Ranger too?"
A boy with a blond ponytail grinned at him. "Yeah, my name's Ethan. Mark my words, this summer I'm going to nail that 270-degree oversplit!"
Kevin blinked in confusion, wondering if it was some kind of archery term. Another boy turned around, giggling.
"I already have 270 degrees, this year I'm going for 360! You'll see." His eyes sparkled brightly as he suddenly stretched his leg behind him, quickly catching it with his hand and holding it up high.
Kevin gasped at the sight. "Wow, how do you do that?" He breathed out.
"Hypermobility, man!" The boy exclaimed proudly and all of a sudden pulled his leg even further over his head, keeping it straight and bringing it almost parallel to the ground.
From what Kevin could tell, it was indeed a 270-degree angle. His mouth opened wide in amazement, while Ethan chuckled beside him.
"Oh I'm so jelly!" He commented. "You're definitely going to share your secret with me, right?"
"Sure thing, man," the bendy boy replied, his grin widening as he got back down on the ground. "Name's Ryan by the way. So uh... what about you, Kevin? What's your favorite move?"
He didn't know what they were talking about exactly, but somehow realized that 'move' meant something like what he had just seen Ryan do.
"Uhhh..." He fumbled for words. "I don't really know, but I think I'd hurt myself trying to do stuff like that."
The other kids looked surprised at his answer, then burst into laughter. Ryan patted on his shoulder playfully.
"Don't worry, bro! We'll teach you everything!" He said confidently. "I think you look like you'd be pretty good at backbends. Don't ask me why, I just know it."
Ethan nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I thought the same when I first saw you. Honestly, I thought you were really flexible already."
Kevin blushed for some reason, even though doing flexible things never crossed his mind just a few minutes ago. "I... I guess I could try," he mumbled nervously.
As the bus drove away, Ryan gave him an encouraging smile. "Trust me, buddy. You're gonna love this camp! It's my fourth year here and it gets better every time."
A tall, silver-haired man with bushy eyebrows stepped forward as they approached the gate. His face was wrinkled with age, but there was a spark of mischief in his eyes.
"Well, well, well, look at them young dragon slayers all ready to conquer the world!" He chuckled with a playful wink. "Welcome to Motion Ranger, where we train champions for the ultimate battle against⦠boredom!"
He held up his hands with a dramatic flourish. "But enough about that, let's get these eager heroes registered and settled in. I'm Mr. Henderson, by the way – head ranger since the dawn of time."
The other kids laughed as Kevin raised an eyebrow at the statement. Ethan nudged him playfully.
"Mr. Henderson was known as 'Bendy Benny' when he was our age," he whispered confidentially. "We call him 'Big Ben' because he's so tall!"
Kevin couldn't help but chuckle along with the others, feeling like he was officially the only one who had no idea what was going on.
"And you must be Kevin... Kevin Limberson?" Big Ben said with a grin.
"Lundbergson, sir," Kevin corrected quickly.
"Ah, yes! Welcome aboard, son! We've got a lot to teach you," the old man replied warmly as he shook Kevin's hand.
As they walked towards the entrance of Motion Ranger, Kevin couldn't help but feel a spark of excitement ignite within him. Maybe this summer wasn't going to be so boring after all.
