It's well known that pirates used to wear big hoop earrings to serve as payment in case of sudden death at sea, especially when they ended up washed ashore. They would engrave their names and hometown onto the earring, so they could be identified and returned home if possible.

But Guybrush Threepwood really wanted to be the greatest pirate of all time, he couldn't settle for just a pair of earrings! The young buccaneer decided to carry an entire treasure chest on himself, investing all his booty to upgrade his necklaces...until there was hardly any room left on his chest for another jewell!

Always knotting his shirt tightly to keep all that bling secure, Guybrush set sail, eager to make history...while also wondering where else he could possibly put his evergrowing collection of riches! So much loot, so little room to store it all!

Well, spending all money on luxury clothing and jewelry was common for pirate and mercenaries, so exploring this theme is natural :)
Also I really like his ponytail.
