So I tried simple vertically scrolling shooter, but at the time I wanted somehow nice graphics so I started learning C which turned to be bit of a nightmare. So next atempt was python and there I managed to do very simple prototype but it took months and again I realized that for even simple game which would be ugly (can't do graphics) years would be needed... so I gave up. Same story as with learning japanesse or painting... each of these things I tried repeatedly like 3-4 times before relizing there just isn't enough time if I want to keep doing other things I already do.
So the fact that you obviously MADE IT now at least... is amazing you made it past that worst hurdle finaly!
Plus I think this "RPG" style is like "real" game I used to like 2D platformers but always regarded them as too 2D :-D (even 3D ones) ehm :-D I hope it make sense.
Highlighting of unfinished places might work fine via certain hotkey like "tab" or on smartphone via special icons. Red dots or gems in default view would ruin your art in my oppinion, break immersion.
Minigames uaaaaa I get the point but in that case I probably never see most of rewards X-D Iam just not too got at them.

Now I'm using the Godot game engine, which has a Python-like language and I think it's practically the Blender of the gamedev world, it has incredible features yet very lightweight and optimized for performance, very amazing resource system and memory management that doesn't have enormous memory leaks like Java and also doesn't crash like C++, also the games work on the web with WebAssembly making it faster than Javascript, best of all it's free, like Coco Chanel's famous saying "best things in the world are free", I think Blender and Godot are on the list XD
I dunno, i just learn most things with Google and YouTube, thanks to a lot of tutorials you can find nowadays... I'm even starting to get better with Blender, modeling and rigging, so my current goal is to switch over from DazStudio to Blender and make my own characters instead of altering the Daz people, maybe even some stylized characters, and experiment with shaders, hopefully change my art style again to something more interesting.
But I agree, about 10 years ago gamedev was hell and very little you could do than learning it the hardcore wayโฆbut yeah, I don't wanna make my games super hard to play so no worries about difficultyโฆmy goal is to make Helmut walk around the world based around my art just for fun but mini games could make activities more interesting I think.
Or there could be places where character can do some special bendy pose which he can't do anywhere else. Like some pose could be done only on chair, other on stairs... and well that "description" thing I was talking about could hint player to that and to press special "pose" button. Like it would not be obvious part of game but more hidden one for bit more currious and hardcore players.
And there would be special page with poses you already discovered this way and you can watch them there :-)

Maybe it's also a good way to highlight objects you've never interacted with by adding red dots to them like some games do to attract attention :3
Yeah I wanted to add special places that trigger special animations, like maybe backfolding with a barbell in the gym or folding into a bucket in the bathroom.
Guess maybe each room could have a number of things you can interact with, so you can see the % of completion in every room, but some objects have special requirements before you can interact with them like winning the minigame gives you a power potion that you can use to do the barbell exercises. Then the goal of the game can be completing all the rooms :3
Visual game assets are great, some superb, like bed from fantastic fantasy!!! :-)
Dressing up animation is amazing too! As well as walking animation as said by other people.
And I laughed a lot while clicking on abstract art description :)
After long thinking I have 2 suggestions which could make game much better in my oppinion. First is scrolling - I am fully aware it must be hard to programm and might be bit problem to implement on smartphones. But on desktop that is a "must" at least for me in every RPG. To be able to go with mouse on the edge of screen and scroll to sides, up and down... to center my screen where I want it to be centered.
And second idea I found to be very world immersing but not used in AAA titles anymore is text hint for every game asset. Be it floor, book shelve, window, wall, carpet which somehow describe thing more. Mechanic should be different than with main items which you already implemented as it should be. Such unclickable items should not blink but just show its description if you ie hower long enough (2sec) over them. The best implementation I have ever saw was in Fallout 1 + 2 old games. Still remember how I laughed at description of most unremarkable items like rocks :-D
Bonus idea - what about some "level" secrets which reveal some of your existing art in full beauty ie in popup window?

I think the first time I started making a game was in 2007 or so, since then I only managed to finish small puzzle games cloned from Mahjong, Tetris and 2048, but not the adventure game I always wanted ๐
This time it's finally a breakthrough because I learned how to do animations and sprites better and finally not spending a week on polishing ONE sprite like some time in the past, which was greatly demotivating ;D
It was also a great change to use an isometric view as it allows to show the world better compared to that straight view where you only get to see one wall out of four on a building. Well, here you can see two walls, so I think it's twice as good :D
Hmm, with so few assets and ideas right now it's hard to think what would be the best controls for the game but it's definitely something to think of ^^

As Yasha goes well he looks different here much more "real" maybe like whole new character as face goes! thanks to many little details and changes whole feeling of picture is different for me. Not bad or worse, just different like more "mature" somehow :-)
Also you are really awesome for working on game and still having time to post such detailed piece.

Both versions are interesting and good... I would say 3D version has better body while 2D is better in face area.
Also as visuals go everything is great even in this early stage. Where I would put focus is controls ie ability to move via keyboard keys. So gameplay feels "snappy".
Movement animations are so very cute :)
Also I must apologize I am out of regular internet connection and that is only reason I don't write bit more often past few days.

I think keyboard controls will not work with this game since it's basically a point'n'click game. You can hold the mouse button if you want to keep moving in some direction.

"serrious" 3D version! But you seamlessly made 2D version which is very different yet also pleasing to look at. I mean it looks so simple compared to other one, yet only because you can draw so well... and most of all know what and how to draw :)
The fact, that he is even here portraied as independent strong "barbarian" is just amazing... and yet you would give him sweet kiss right away :D + even quick story is funny and good hearted what more to say...

This comment moved me... because I think in similar way and just do not understand "mainstream, people" at all at times.
I apologize for being Off topic! And writing more text than I should.
Exactly as you said you have ie great game which worked 24 years ago and gave everyone so much joy and is still exactly same today. Yet very little people give it even try now and want to play "new new new" which is usually worse... because its targeted these days to "everyone" not skilled audience. It is SIMPLIFIED too much. And indie titles are too "meta" on other hand, for people with no other hobbies. (And of course I know there are great new things every year! I just missed.)
Even ie internet browser as you know - I want it to work as I am used to... I don't want to turn it on and find new icons I'll never use, new bugs. My time is precious I don't want to spend hours to "get used" because I know that effort is meaningless as yet another "new" layout, features, look will be inserted upon me in just few months... all the which gives mi ZERO benefit compared to old. Those all are upgrades just for the sake of upgrades not real progress.
Pretty soon in my life I realized how insignificant we are. We live only blink of an eye compared to age of only known universe (how old and big is unknown eh?!) and are so small literally

So I kinda refused mentally to be "ruled" by time or what others do. I like thing "X" and I will like it century from now unless I find really better thing "Y". But even then I will always remember fondly that old thing. Ie old anime characters I used to love so much.
And also I always searched for timeless patterns, you know the stuff people (or even animals, nature) did millennia ago and which still works today! And there is plenty of those including art styles. And yet many more were forgotten thanks to ever present laziness and effort to "cut corners" until you cut them too much too many times and break the "thing" and forgot it. Until it is rediscovered much latter again.
And I just feel day after day, that bright future promised so strongly and repeatedly in late 80s 90s and early 00s was redirected somewhere to mildly dystopian sci-fi world full of lemmings. As if it was stolen right before everyone eyes yet almost everyone is BLIND and too stupid to realize that. And find shocking how people so eagerly "drink" that new poisoned toxic "culture / life style" even if there are records of old joy giving or marvelous great alternative stuff (your works) available. And it is so obvious, because what "we" watch again and again? Bastardized remakes of 30y old stuff like Ghostbusters... which adds nothing to that classic even Marvel-verse sucks old characters and plots dry with only little real new substance.
Eeeeeh :-D sorry I end it right here as I started to rant too much. But I feel so good knowing you see things at least somehow similarly as I do love your art most. And times will change for the better, I still believe that.

Yeah, I personally think that in the future there should be laws forbidding automatic software updates, much like there's the laws about cookies and user data and all that stuff... Because it's turning into a huge problem with so many bad programmers in the world. If I want a new version, I can download it myself, and I don't want to be forced to beta-test someone's bugged code.

You know the Oscar awards, Hollywood not only making movies but awarding themselves for making them, just how silly is that? If you want to feel significant, you should do the same, simply invent your own criteria for significance and then give yourself a prize :D

Yeah but we live on a miracle planet that is so unique that no other known planet has air, water, forests, cities and even the internet. This is practically the most significant planet in the entire known universe and humans are the most significant species, according to themselves :D

Iam so grateful for all those little insights you tell us about creating those masterpieces.
And when you speak about it - even in high budget shows these days you can see it is all just lazzy copy paste of same models. And as you said its not immersive how even 25 years old movie CGI scenes were. At that time true artists gave their best to make unforgetable scenes... . As you are doing for us that is!!! And yours are even better many times :-)

Thank you so much for taking your time to comment the same way after I think more than 2 or 3 years since your first comments here! All long-term things always made me very happy for some reason, e.g. people who do the same thing for years, musicians who make albums after albums in the same style, video games you can play for many months sometimes without getting bored, programs and tools that you used for years and they never get old, etc... I'm not saying I don't like new things and new people, just long-term things give the feeling of something special :D
Your "white" is off the charts! It should be only one simplest color but all those crystals, sparks, reflections, shades!!! are so stimulating. Ie the scarf is so unique...
And ehm Yasha sure knows how to chill out even during workout.... thanks for artistic feast.

In past days I gave a LOT thought the problem of limbless/armless body. And concluded simple naga/snakelike body is not first answer because it is too advanced, foreign.
Also simply fully limbless body is for many people very arousing but only in surface fantasy. When you actually imagine daily life only already super bendy elf could be happy like that. Thinking about Nuv... your solution with semi transparent magical limbs was masterpiece!!!
So in my opinion if you are living in amazing future or Yuniverse and are starting to enjoy more advanced body mods like Miguel in this image you still need some part of body for interactions. You could go for advanced artificial limbs but it's not "it". Only answer I could think of were legs... but I realized you need thigh part with bones and all to have sexy "classical" core of being for "beginner". But what about everything down from and including knees?! If that part had no bones and was more like very strong ligament/muscle. It could also change shape and grant owner fast movement and very elegant look complementing back bend. But what if it could also change to more handlike shape?! (Just look how many shapes palm of hand can do and it is cramped with all the fixed bones).
I tried to imagine Miguel in various situations and if his hip joints were anything like your other characters have... there be way to serve gracefully drinks but also ie insert his leg in butty (as it can change shape to degree it could look more like tentacle and elongate for it). Hell my naughty mind is now seeing another sweated demigod which can run like little devil and do all kinds of acrobatic stunts with absolute ease. Even best swordsman could not hit his fast moving evading torso and would soon found themselves on the ground without clothes being eagerly "topped" X-D ... enjoying it of course in the end.
It really means a lot I can share such ideas, as I am thinking about bodies one would care to try out if that was possibility... not "just" sex fantasies :-)
